Cedar Decking Is A Great Choice, But Which Type Should You Choose?

Of all the decking material options available to choose from, cedar decking is among the best. Not only does it look great, but it is also fragrant and durable. As you begin looking for the perfect type of cedar to choose for your deck, you might want to compare red cedar and white cedar.

Why cedar?

Cedar is one of the best types of wood to use for outdoor projects, but it is also popular for indoor projects too. It is a great material for decks because it:

  • Repels moisture – This is one of the most important features of a deck. When material absorbs moisture, it can bow, warp, and rot.
  • Requires little maintenance – Almost any decking material you choose will require maintenance, but cedar only needs to be sealed every couple years to keep it looking and functioning great.
  • Costs less than composite decks – Composite decks may need less maintenance than cedar decks; however, you will spend more on composite decking material.

Cedar comes in a variety of different types; however, there are two types that are most popular.

Red or White?

According to Woodweb, red cedar is typically considered stronger than white cedar. Western red cedar is one of the most popular types of cedar in the U.S. and Canada, and this is primarily because it is plentiful. Western red cedar trees are extremely large, and the wood that comes from these trees contains a large amount of natural oils.

When you purchase Western red decking materials, you will be able to select from several different grades. Higher quality grades will be more expensive; however, they will also look nicer and last longer. Red cedar decking is also extremely resistant to bacteria, but the red hues in the wood can fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight.

White cedar is also a great option to choose for decking; however, it is not as plentiful in the U.S. Because of this it can be harder to obtain and may cost more. While white cedar may not fade as quickly as red, it is not usually as hard as red cedar. Because of this, it may not last as long.

Both types of cedar are good for decks, and you can compare your options by looking at samples of each type. When you decide which type you prefer, make sure you purchase the material from a reputable company that sells traditional decking materials. Visit a website like for more information.
